What is an IMEI?
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity: a 15–17 digit number that identifies one specific device on the mobile network.
Every phone and tablet with a SIM has one. Networks use it to tell a legitimate device from a cloned one, and it is what a stolen handset is blocked by.
How to find it
On iPhone or iPad
- Settings → General → About
- Look for the IMEI field
On Android
- Settings → About phone
- Look for IMEI or Device ID
- Or dial *#06# on the keypad
On the device
Under the battery if it comes out, or printed on the back or the SIM tray.
On the box
Usually on the barcode label on the original packaging.
Why check one?
- Catch a typo before it matters — The check digit catches almost every single-digit mistake — worth doing before you write an IMEI onto a receipt or a warranty.
- Confirm the number is real — A number that fails the check digit was never issued to a device. It is a made-up number.
- Check it matches the phone — Dial *#06# and compare it with the box and the SIM tray. Three that disagree is a phone worth asking about.
- Record it at intake — A repair shop that writes the IMEI down at intake can prove which device it took in and which it handed back.
